Concerta side effects?

My 8 year old son just started taking 18 mg concerta this morning. Now he can't stop talking and is even more fidgety than on no medication. It's like it made his symptoms worse. This is the first medicine we have tried for his ADHD and I'm wondering if anyone has had this experience with concerta.

  • Call the doctor or pharmacist and let him know. this could be a temporary side-effect. Did you read the information sheet which should have come with the med?

If i were concerned about the drug my child is taking i'd call?

  • Did you read the leaflet that comes with the medication?

Amongst the side effects listed under 'report to your doctor" are "uncontrolled muscle movements (such as twitching, shaking), sudden outbursts of words/sounds that are hard to control, "

It would seem this is something you should discuss with his doctor.

Unmedicated my daughter would talk non stop about anything. I could always tell the second her medication kicked in (about 15 mins after taking it) because she wiuld stop mid sentance and start holding a normal conversatuon.

  • I have no direct experience of this but if you google 'concerta side effects' you will find some very good websites including webmd that give you a list of effects and side effects.

I like to avoid medication wherever possible, so I would ask whether you son plays enough physical games and gets enough exercise during the day, and also how much sleep he gets at night, or whether he is allowed to stay up late playing games on a tablet.

When I was young we never had ADHD, partly because we were physically tired and were happy to sit still in class. There were no computers so we got a good night's sleep every night and were refreshed in the morning.
