Algebra word problem?
Leslie and Jan drove a total of 268 miles in 5 hours. Leslie drove the first part of the trip and averaged 35 miles per hour. Jan drove the remainder of the trip and averaged 65 miles per hour. For what length of time did Leslie drive?
I keep writing the problem as: 65x + 35(x -5) = 268. And I keep getting 3.1 as the answer. I think I am doing this wrong. Could you explain?

You mixed up the x and x-5. Your equation should be
65(x-5) + 35x = 268
:::::
J+L =5
65(5-L)+35L =268
Leslie drove for 1.9 hours = 1 hour and 54 minutes.
Did they drive half the distance each or half the time each? You state 'part' as the measurement.
