ARMY WIFE NEEDS NO FEE PASSPORT?

I am an army wife and myself and my son are accompanying my husband to Okinawa, Japan (he leaves dec. 2nd)

We were told that all we needed to do was take our docs. (birth certificates, SS cards, IDs, marriage license) with us AND my husband's orders to the office on base here, and they would take care of getting us our no-fee passports.

My husband called the base and a woman advised him to fill out online applications for us (that DO have fees at the end of the application- but she claimed it was free of fees) it all just doesn't make too much sense to me since I went to the office once before and spoke to the woman who processes these no-fee passports and said NOTHING about filling online apps.

Can someone help me out by giving me any info on what they had to do to get their no-fee passports?

  • You will have to fill out your paperwork. The reason they are asking you to fill it out on line is because you then print it and it's filled out, nice and neat. You don't actually send it in on-line.

Yes, it mentions that there are fees. But, don't worry about that. You are not taking it to the PO to be processed, but back to the base. They will handle it all from there.

Besides your No-fee passport, make sure you get a tourist passport. They have really tightened everything up over the past year and it's almost impossible to do any tourist travel on your no-fee. So... pay the extra money up front now and get tourist passports for the family, including hubby.

Have fun and do LOTS of traveling!

  • Mustangs is incorrect. You may travel back to the states on leave status with just your military ID card and your DA 31 (leave form.) Your wife and child can's do the same. I would recommend that you speak to your commander and try to work out a leave that would accommodate your situation later down the road. My wife and I just had a child a few weeks ago and we were informed that we would, under no circumstances, be allowed to depart the country with the child without her passport, with official orders or not. The passport takes between 8 - 12 weeks to process. I would recommend you check with your passport office and have them initiate a trace to see the status and go from there.

  • fill out the paperwork online. I just renewed our tourist ones and you can print them out ahead of time and just bring them in. Just did it myself.. also PCSing to Oki early next year.

you actually do not pay the fee online.

  • There are some copy cat sites that are actualy agents that charge fees, you should make sure that you are on the right site (free) they are very trickey, but there should be a free site.
