Why do potato guns fire inconsistently?

My question is why does my potato gun, powered by hair spray and a potato for a projectile, sometimes fire with a bang and go far and other times create more of a poof noise and may go only 50 feet or so? I try my best to keep the ammo and hair spray about the same every time but the results are very inconsistent. My theory is that the hairspray may mix unevenly inside the gun causing the hairspray to ignite slower or faster. I don't know if my theory is right or not. PLZ HELP!!!

  • It has to do with the seal around the potato to create a seal everytime make wading, like in a shotgun shell. My best friend Tom made one and he uses paper towels to create a seal behind the potato. this way you keep 100% of the gases behind the potato. When it only goes 50ft its because the gas is escaping around the potato. Just barely wet and dampen the paper towel. It`s going to be 10x`s louder too.

  • you will could desire to have an exceedingly intense preassure then. the least confusing thank you to try this must be to apply a gas cannister particularly than water. inspite of the incontrovertible fact that in case you made some form of pump or hydraulic device then you gets the preassure you prefer.
