Does tartar break off?
I was brushing my teeth today and part of this yellow bit that had been on my tooth for a long time just broke off. I'm scared to death it was enamel or something but my grandmother tells me it's tartar. I have a dentist appointment in two weeks but could use some reassuring. It's was yellow-ish with some brownness, and broke up in my hand.

Unless it was an old composite filling, it was tartar. That is scraped off every 6 months when your teeth are cleaned. It irritates your gums and causes them to recede. Which over time will cause bone loss, thus over years causing your teeth to get loose. Please take care of your teeth.
