How Does Femara Work?

was taking 2.5mg of Femara from day 3 to 7. My DR had told me that I would be most fertile starting day 10. However, I still had my period so we couldn't really try...does anyone know for how many days you're fertile after taking those Femara?

Also, since I wasn't regular, he had prescribed me these other pills to start my period and hadtold me that once my period came, then to start taking Femara from day 3-7....hope you guys get it !!! I left him a msg last week so im still waiting to hear from him...

Thanks a lot!

  • I was on Femara for 4 cycles.

Femara does not make you fertile, it induces ovulation. It's mainly used for women who cannot ovulate on their own.

When the enzyme aromatase is inhibited by Femara, estrogen levels are suppressed. This results in the brain and pituitary gland increasing the output of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). In women that have polycystic ovary syndrome or anovulation (a problem with ovulation) the increase in FSH hormone can result in development of a mature follicle in the ovary and ovulation of an egg. Doctors call this process "induction of ovulation".

For women who take Femara and ovulate on their own, Femara may increas multiple follicles, but not in all cases. I ovulate on my own, but Femara only generated one follicle for me each cycle.

Day 3-7 is the most important time to take Femara. That's when I took it too. Day 10 is the day you are supposed to start testing for Ovulation with an Ovulation Predictor Kit (OPK). Day 10 does not neccessarily mean that is your most fertile day. It just means that it MAY be.

Most women are most fertile on day 14. I am day 16. I start testing though on day 11.

    Good luck to you!
