Sims 3 - How do you enter a meal into a contest?

On Sims 3, I want to enter a contest. You have to make a meal..I made the meal, but how do I enter it into the contest?

I clicked on the icon on the contest, but it said I don't have the the required stuff in my inventory. ( the contest doesn't require anything special. ) How do I get my meal into my inventory?

    Prepare a meal then drag it from the counter to your Sim, then attend the cooking contest by clicking the icon.
