Can you espalier a citrus tree?

I have a very small backyard but would like to grow some citrus trees. I also have a lovely wall that is just ripe for some espalier tree work! Can citrus trees be espalier-ed? Or am I limited to apple, fig, and stone fruit trees?

Thanks!

  • Citrus is not well adapted for espaliers but yes you can. This is possible for almost any tree. Although not well suited, I would certainly try it if I needed to. If you can do figs, you should be able to do citrus. With citrus, there are dwarf varieties which do not take must space. Why not try them?

  • any tree with a spreading growth habit can be espaliered. i would rather wee you do any fruit on a fence instead of a wall; you will get better air circulation and will not have roots interfering with foundation.

  • I wouldn't - they're prone to mildew and need more ventilation than having it up against a wall would provide. Actually, I wouldn't put any fruit tree up against a wall in that manner for that reason. You can grow dwarf citrus in containers - meyer lemon is a good one (and YUMMMMY!), as is kumquat and some tangerine varieties.
