That's a pretty broad question as "classic" rock covers a lot of different artists,genres,and time periods.Rock was popular from the start I guess some pioneering artists would be bill halley and the comets,chuck berry,elvis,buddy holly,ritchie valens,etc
I'd guess "The Beatles" are one influence-from the 60's, Rolling Stones have been around for several yrs, (Elvis is the king-most everyone agree's on that)

Do you mean who made rock back in the 50's and 60's popular, or who made stuff from the past popular in today's generation?
To me, classic rock means The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple.

The people who loved it, listened to it, and then bought it. Hence, "Popular".
