It was essentially a copy. The owner approached Disney years ago about building a park in japan but Disney refused (I believe the company was involved in either the 1964 World's Fair or focussed on developing plans for Walt Disney World).
Nara Dreamland has now closed, I believe, possibly due to competition from Disneyland Tokyo.
Yes. There is much resemblance between the two parks. Including riders, the castle, although Lethe characters are not Disney copy.
