You need to test your water to see what's really going on. Although the most likely case is that you're in the middle of an algae bloom, you should really make sure your water chemistry is in balance. That includes finding out how much calcium is in your pool, etc.

You don't need a separate algicide, because chlorine IS an algicide. Without knowing what your cyanuric acid levels are (CYA), I can't tell you how high you need to bring your free chlorine to, but I can guarantee it will be higher than test strips can go. The thing you need to remember is that shocking is a process, not a product. You need to raise your chlorine levels up to shock level, and keep them there (adding more chlorine as needed while it is used up killing the algae) until your pool is clean and clear, and you stop losing chlorine to algae.
