How to convert AVI videos?

I have been trying to convert some AVI videos using movie maker from windows, and other softwares, but it takes so long. Just for a 10 min clip it takes an hour! What can I use that is fast, I don't care if I have to buy the software, I need something that would conver it fast, and burn it fast.
