Does USPS charge for a receipt for a prepaid package?

I went to the Hollywood Blvd, Florida post office with my insured prepaid package. I asked for a receipt. I was told that there is a charge of $1.10 for that service. Does anybody know if the post office is allowed to charge for a receipt for a prepaid package? I have gotten a receipt at other post offices and never been charged.

  • Technically, if there is no financial transaction, there is no receipt to provide.

  • I am sure the clerk was thinking of a Return Receipt...a green card that is signed at delivery by the addressee. There is indeed a charge for this. If all you wanted was something showing that you put the item in the mail, well there isn't really anything in the system to do that. Most prepaid shipping labels have a tracking number. I hope you kept a record of this. You can look it up and print off the result. It should get a scan when it leaves that PO at a minimum.

  • They sure are. If you want an extra purchase, you have to pay for it.
