My water heater made a strange noise?

I have a 40 gallon electric water heater. It's small, since I live in an apartment. There is sort of this built in shelf in the laundry closet that it sits in. The dryer fits underneath it, the washer beside the dryer. But I don't have a W&D, so I've turned it into my computer closet. My little desk fits perfectly in here, but I'm always worried that something will go wrong with the water heater and it'll leak all over my stuff. Anyway, a little while ago, my water heater made a really strange noise. It sounded like water starting to come out of a pipe, like when you turn on a sink that hasn't been on in awhile. Then immediately, it started making these weird popping noises, exactly like the sound made when you drop water into a pan of hot grease. The popping noises got quieter and fewer between for a total of about 10-15 seconds (like it slowly stopped) and then nothing. It hasn't made a noise since. It was really loud though, and I've lived here for over a year now and it's never made a noise much at all, much less like that one. So should I be worried? What does it sound like might have happened. Someone suggested to me that maybe the heater was empty and it started filling up. But I don't think so, because I checked immediately after and I have hot water. If it had been empty, then I wouldn't have. Also, they suggested that maybe the heating element shorted out. Is that likely it? What should I do? I don't want to call the maintenance guy unless there's a good reason, because it's hell getting them to show up and 90% of the time they don't do anything once they get here.

  • I don't think there is a problem as all you heard was air that had been trapped in the incoming line making its way into your tank. Hope this helps

  • What you heard was natural expansion and contraction of hot surfaces

that have been heated. The way your water is installed is not a good way

unless there is an overflow pan with an installed drain to facilitate proper

drainage if the tanks safety relief valve were to operate. Personal suggestion

a little water can do an amazing amount of damage especially to a Computer.

Move your computer out of that area. A pound of prevention is worth a ton of

    agonizing damage.

  • First, make CERTAIN that the Pressure/Temperature relief valve has a down pointing drain line, in case it gets 'tripped': then your electronics won't get destroyed.

The 'popping' may be the heating element (lower) warming up: they sometimes get covered with calcium carbonate precipitation build-up, and it's 'cooking off' that element. Note the condition is somewhat detrimental to these elements and is a bear to clean up.

These should all be maintenance procedures done by the Super, depending on what your lease contract calls for, of course.
