Physics problem, please help?
Gold, which has a density of 19.32 g/cm^3, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber.
(a) If a sample of gold with a mass of 5.733 g, is pressed into a leaf of 6.011 μm thickness, what is the area (in m^2) of the leaf?
(b) If, instead, the gold is drawn out into a cylindrical fiber of radius 2.900 μm, what is the length (in m) of the fiber?
Comments
so here u r using,
d=m/v v=m/d 5.733/19.32 cm^3 gold is used.
as there is no temperature changes,
then apply the volume equation to both situation.
for leaf,
V=Ad, A=V/d
=5.733/19.32 x 1/6.011 x ^10-4
=493.660174 cm^2
=0.049366 m^2
=0.05 m^2
for fibre,
V = pir^2h, h = V/pi r^2
= 5.733/19.32 x 1/3.14159 x 1/(2.9 x 10^-4)^2
= 1.123128717 x 10^6 cm
= 11.23 km.
