Suspend Verizon cell contract temporary?
I signed up with Verizon last year in August (2yr. cell phone contract) not knowing that I'll have to move to Europe for 8 months in total.
Time line as of now:
3 months Europe - 3 Months US - 5 Months Europe - x years US
Is it somehow possible to suspend the contract and re-initiate it when I come back? I'd like to keep the service and the number and avoid the penalty fee.
Any inputs greatly appreciated!

Most wireless providers have a clause in their contract that says if you move outside of a service area, you're entitled to canceling the contract without the early termination penalty.
My best advice would be to contact Verizon Customer Service and see if they can place a "hold" on your account. Or, you may just have to cancel and repick it up when you get back. The risk? You'll probably lose your number.
This is not totally ethical but you can tell your provider that you're an army reservist that has been called up for overseas duty. They'll suspend your contract, no questions asked.
