Calculus problem, help please!?

A boat is pulled toward a dock by means of a rope wound on a drum that is located 6 ft above the bow of the boat. If the rope is being pulled in at the rate of 5 ft/sec, how fast is the boat approaching the dock when it is 15 ft from the dock? (Round your answer to one decimal place.)

____ft/sec?

  • The Distancc of the boat from the dock is S

    6/S = Cos A where A is the angle that the rope makes with the ;boat

    S = 6/CosA

    15 = 6/ Cos a and cos A = 6/15 - 0,4

    Velocity of the Boat = Velocity of the Rope (Cos A) = 5 x 0.4 = 2 fps
