Why was austria-hungary made?

I'm making this history project about Austria-Hungary (also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire or the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy) but I can't figure out WHY the two countries formed a dual monarchy back in 1887!?

Please help!!!

  • The Ausgleich was in 1867,rather than in 1887

Hungarian nationalists were amking a lot of trouble for Emperor Franz Joseph, and destabilizing the Austrian empire.

Franz Joseph made a deal with the leaders of the Hungarian nationalists.Hungary would be given its own capital city, its own Parliament (with law making powers) and its own Prime Minister. The name of the state would be changed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with Franz Joseph becoming King of HUngary as well as Emperor of Austria (hence the Dual Monarchy). The cenral imperial government in Austria would retain overall control of the military, foreign policy, and economic policy (so in reality, everything that really mattered). In return,Hungarian nationalists would drop their demands and agitation for full independence.

The Hungarian nationalist leaders agreed. The deal was called the Ausgleich, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire officially came into being 1 March 1867

Rank and file Hungarian nationalists were not at all impressed by this obvious sellout by their leaders, who were the ones who got all the plum posts in the new Hungarian parliament.
