How to pitch our book to a distributor?

I talked to the distributor and he said to write a pitch to them, and send the book and they will get back to me. What is needed in order to pitch my book to a distributor?

    Whoa. Giant step backward. This is not how you sell books.

    I would do some in-depth research on the distributor, both the individual and the business name, because this screams fishy to me.

    If your book is from a paying publisher, they do the distribution and promotion, although your promotional efforts can and probably should supplement theirs.

    If you book is from a vanity press, the distributor is unlikely to be able to increase its sales potential--but I bet he can get some writers to pay in expectation of more.
