Food Grade DE & horses?

Mk so we have gotten some FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth to just fart around with, because two relatives are using it and are just in love with the stuff for... everything.

I want to know the FACTS.

I don't know if this site is factual or not. It *seems* legit.

Even if there is no scientific proof to validate the claims, it is NOT harmful to feed, to just experiment with? I DO have the food grade. Yes siree. I'd honestly like to try taking it myself as well.

Update:

Snezzy, if you're like my vet (who was meant to be doing research on EMS for me), you will suddenly go missing and then months later mysteriously reappear in Costa Rica.

  • i've never looked into feeding or eating this stuff. i just learned about DE last year when i was looking for a way to keep bugs and slugs out of the garden because i hate using poisons for this. it works pretty good as far as i can tell. it also works good to keep the creepy crawlies out of the house. if the web site is true this stuff is magic. after seeing this i'll be looking into this more myself.

I've been poking around a bit. the only real study i've found so far has to do with cholesterol. the only bad thing i came across is that you shouldn't breathe the stuff.

  • I seem to remember that I investigated DE like ten years ago and found no scientific evidence that it was helpful. In particular I think it has zero effect on worms. On the other hand, it might function like the "elephant dust" in the story I tell below. If the horses do not have worms, DE will work fine as a dewormer.

Harry: "What's that you're doing Larry?"

Larry: "Sprinkling elephant dust. It keeps elephants away."

    Harry: "That can't possibly work!"

Larry: "Don't see any elephants, do you?"

I'll see if I can dredge up actual facts over the next day or three.

  • The scratch factor of DE is eliminated inside the wet environment of the digestive tract. Totally defeated on the purpose. That's a fact.
