Epidural: Yes or No????????????????????????

Update:

I want your opinion, not whether or not I should get it. Did you have an epidural? Why or why not?

  • After having 1 natural birth and 1 birth with an epidural, I'm gonna go with the epidural. Yeah, it was nice not to be hooked up to a bunch of monitors with the natural birth, but I couldn't enjoy things as much as I did with the epidural because I was too busy concentrating on managing the pain.

  • I wanted a completely natural birth to be able to experience the "enchilada", however I did end up having an epidural after 14 hours of dry labor with no pain meds. I was not dilating and the doctor told me it was probably due to me not relaxing at all. After the epidural I went from 4 cent. to 10 in 4 hrs. I think its wonderful if you can hold off, but in another sense, when I go into labor this time, I will have an epidural because I think you are actually able to enjoy the time better and you are not as tired afterwards with such a long labor. Good luck to you!!!

  • It all depends on how well you handle pain. I know a good bit of people who never got an epidural and they said it wasn't that bad. When I had my son, I went in thinking I could do it without the epidural. I got to about 5cm and decided that I just couldn't take the pain anymore and got the epidural.

  • i was hell bent on not having one. i wanted as natural a labor as i could handle.

i got 2 shots of stadol (or how ever it's spelled)

in hopes that that would be enough for the doozie contractions, it helped for about 5 hours.

however when my labor pains started to move to my back i couldn't handle that pain and asked for an epidural. turned out less than 2 hours later i needed an emergency c section so i would have had to have one any way.

it really did knock out all my pain and i was able to sleep.

  • Depends on how fast you progress through your labor and how well you handle pain.

I got one with my first and it didn't kick in until the next day. I am not doing one this time if I don't absolutely feel the need to.

  • YES!

my doctor waited to give me mine until i was in labor for over 15hrs. since she said it would slow down your labor. but by that point i could no longer breath. i was have contractions every 35seconds and they would last up to 2mins.

  • depends on how well you handle pain
