ok so hears a thought ,so the phantom ends up running phantasma land or what ever it's called his own freak sideshow,i think he would have a phobia about this type of setting if the original plot is anything to go by
what are your thoughts ?

Having seen both, I can say that he's not really running it, he's just manipulating the few things that pertain to him. It's all just part of a plot to get Christine to come back. Also, the setting isn't much creepier than his lair under the opera house. He sings a whole song about loving things creepy and mystical, so it seems pretty natural
The phantom was a living person but just got the name as a ghost , and meg was annoyed as because she was the leading show girl until christine showed up
