WoW 10 day free trial problem?

My friend decided to download the Trial version of WoW a couple minutes ago. It looks like it's running great and everything, but hes unable to click certain things such a the drop down arrows for the screen resolution. (The arrow actually doesn't show, neither does the box around it)

Basically, there's only text, no surrounding box buttons for him to click. Any ideas? he cant get past the point where it asks you to set your realm type or whatever. The boxes to check don't even show. :/

    Almost sounds like his computer won't support it. He's missing DirectX 9.0 or the most up-to-date video card drivers or something.
