how do you know if a deer tick is embedded in your scalp?

after going in woods we can check body but are concerned we might miss a deer tick on scalp

  • Ticks will always be visible, so if you examine carefully enough, you'll find them. Only the mouth parts of the tick are embedded in the skin; the rest stays outside, so you can always see it if you look carefully enough.

    The scalp is an unusual place for ticks, since it is quite high on the body, and ticks cannot fly or jump. They may, however, crawl up to the scalp in some cases, since they like to walk around for 20-30 minutes before choosing a place to bite.

    Tick bites on the scalp can cause inflammation of nearby lymph nodes, such as behind the ear or on the neck (usually on the same side as the bite). If you feel inflamed nodes under your skin, you might have a tick bite nearby.
