Does a root canal hurt?
Here is the situation:
I have a molar on my left side that has originated as a small cavity and I had it filled and then the filling came out so I had it refilled again and it last awhile...
Recently, I was eating something and part of my molar feel off but the part that is suppose to be covered is still covered which is why I am not experiencing any pain.
I went to the dentist and she told me that there is an infection in the molar and that I could either have a root canal or the molar abstracted (removed). I wanted to start crying immediately because I do not do well at the dentist, I get panicky and I have a strong gag reflex.
I also ended up having this happen to me the Wednesday before graduation on Saturday and then I had to stay and work at school until Tuesday after graduation and then right when I came home Christmas Eve was the next day. So it was hard for anyplace to be open but I am going to call really dentist or oral surgeon real soon. I just want to know what can be done.
Does getting a root canal and a crown hurt? Am I thinking about it too hard and making a bigger deal than it actually is? I don't mine the pain afterwards I can take stuff for that- I am just nervous for the actual procedure.
Please let me know what you think
Update:The dentist was also very nice and gave me really strong antibiotics to get rid of the infection and keep it from spreading even though it gave me heartburn and a mild head ache from time to time.

The best thing is, to save a tooth if the prognosis is very good (at least 90%). That should be your first option. If the tooth was removed then an implant should be placed to prevent future damage to other teeth. Good luck with your decision Jared.
Make sure that the dentist really wants you to keep your tooth--mine would do anything to save a tooth because when one is missing the other teeth can shift. A root canal really doesn't hurt and the main problem is getting the numbing shots. See if your dentist will recommend something to calm you down and/or ask for gas. I have allergies and need to clear my throat and my dentist has been able to work around this. Explain the gagging problem and discuss options. I'd do it when you make the appointment and again when you are in the chair.
I once lost part of a tooth on New Year's Eve and had to go to a party for my husband's work, so I know what it's like to have this happen when it is totally not convenient.
Usually a regular dentist can do a root canal and crown. The only time I had to go to an oral surgeon was when there was a problem with the bone and the root canal was to enable them to do the surgery.
I've had a lot of root canals and have gone through phases where I couldn't sleep for worry about even a regular appointment coming up. I've learned to make myself think of something else when I find myself obsessing. You can also wear ear phones and listen to something you like to hear--music, talking book, affirmation tapes.
Good luck.
a few years ago I had a root canal down on the last tooth in the back of the top of my mouth....I got to wear some movie glasses but I did say ouch a few times and could feel tears running down my face sooo she gave me another shot. the crown is not bad at all...I liked the white one over my tooth.
A root canal does hurt but it depends on person to person
the thing that hurts most is when they numb your mouth by giving you a shot
but after that it doesnt hurt because your mouth is numb ..........anymore questions just ask me Good luck
Yes it does
