My dog that has floppy ears has been shaking his head back and forth. I got to looking in his ears and they are both filled with a black oily waxy looking stuff. It also smells really bad. Is this an infection? Is ear wax usually black?
Normally I would suggest you get special ear cleaning fluid for him, but as he is shaking his head he may have mites or an infection. Take him to the vet to get that checked. If the dog continues to shake his head, he can rupture blood vessles and his ear flap will fillup with blood. He then has to go to the vet to have that drained and fixed. he can end up with a cauliflower ear.
You could try cleaning them first though. You squirt the fluid into the ear and massage in well. Your dog will groan and really lean into it cos he will really like it. Then just wipe out the ear with a cotton ball ,,,, never ever use a cotton bud (q-tip in USA isnt it). The dogs ear canal has a bend in it and you will just compound the problem.
Could be wax build up, could be ear mites, could be infection. Either way he needs a vet check! My dog was doing a little pawing at her ears and shaking her head so I took her to the vet and was told that she had wax build up. I bought some Epi-Otic from the vet and treated the problem. The longer you wait the more costly it could be, not to mention how miserable it is for your pet. I read somewhere that you can actually see ear mites by swabbing the ear VERY gently and rubbing the black residue on white paper.. then with a magnifying glass you can see the mites crawling away from the "pile". Good luck!
Sounds like a yeast infection from the smell and all... Yes it is a type of yeast that overpopulates in the ear canal. Your dog definately needs to go to the vet and get some medication. If you let it go on too long. there is a possibility of the pup going deaf. I was a vet tech for 3 years.
Also, get some ear wash to clean his ears out at least once a week or more to prevent that from happening. If the inside of the ear canal gets wet from swimming or a bath, thats more than likely what caused it also..
Did you clean his ears regularly? There is an ear cleaning solution which brings out the oily waxy stuff from dogs' ear. All u have to do is to squeeze the solution into his ears and then massage his ears for a while.
Your dog most likely has ear mites, you can buy the medicine from places that sell pet supplies, but I think you should get the vet to check it out. If left go can cause hearing loss, infection, and death. We have a long-eared dog and the vet told us ear-mites are common in long ears. But you need a professional opinion.
It probably is an infection and you should take the dog to a vet. My Bouvier develop an allergy to peanut butter and this caused the same symptoms. So it could be an infection, allergy or mites. I was given medication to put in his ears twice a day for two weeks at a cost of $20.00.
yes is an infaction ...Infections of the external ear canal (outer ear) by bacteria or yeast, are one of the most common types of infections seen in dogs. This is called otitis externa. A dog with an ear infection is uncomfortable; his ear canals are sensitive. He shakes his head trying to get the debris and fluid out, and scratches his ears. The ears often become red and inflamed and develop an offensive odor. A black or yellowish discharge commonly occurs .. take the dog to the vet they will give u drops to put in the dogs ears .. it'll be ok but be sure to go as soon as possible
It's an infection and you should take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Dogs with floppy ears have a tendcy to get it. My dog has a tendcy to get it on one side. My wife has to make sure she keeps her ears clean.
The vet will clean out the dog's ears, and show you how to do it and give you some liquid to clean it out with and some medication to put in its ears.
Once you have the infection under control it just becomes a matter of prevention.
Get some ear mite medicine from your vet or Petsmart.
Clean the ears daily w/peroxide. Then put drops into ears, rubbing base of ears together....10 days do this. Then bath your dog-to get rid of any mites that might have climb outside ear on body hair.

Either infection or ear mites. See a vet. If you don't want to, might as well get dog infection ear drops or ear mite ear drops.
