Is OpenOfficea safe program?

I have Microsoft Office, but a friend of mine doesn't - and her parents won't but it. I was searching around and I found OpenOffice, the free suite of applications. My only question is, is it safe? Like, does it contain viruses if you download directly from the site? Can it possibly infect your computer? Will it slow your computer down? And is it even worth getting? Any insight would be appreciated, so thank you in advance.

  • Free and safe, at openoffice.org ~

  • Yes OpenOffice is safe. It was released a couple of years ago by Sun Microsystems as a free alternative to Microsoft Office. The only downside to using OpenOffice is some utilities are not available that MS Office has.

It is free from viruses as long as you get it from OpenOffice.org and not from another site like Torrent. I've used it for several years in conjunction with my iPhone's Office program.

  • Open Office is a free and safe word processor. It can open .docx and .doc files, and Microsoft Word can open its default save format, .odt. Open Office is an open source program, meaning its source code is made available to the public by Sun Microsystems, who acquired the code from Star Division in 1999.

Open Office is a viable alternative to Microsoft Word, the biggest difference probably being the lower quality spell checker (and maybe the graphics.) Anyone who uses Linux has their main operating system probably uses Open Office, and the most popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu, comes with Open Office already installed.

  • It's totally safe. Just get it from openoffice.org
