graphics card 2 gb or 1 gb?

i am on my first pc build and i am looking at the graphics card for my build. i currently have the asus p8z68-v pro gen 3 motherboard and the intel i5 2500k processor. i think the graphics card i will go for is the radeon 6870 but i am unsure if i should get the 1 gb or 2 gb there is a drastic price difference between the 2. i want to run bf3 on high settings but is the 2 gb card really necessary?

  • If your screen resolution is 1680x1050 or lower, it doesn't matter. At those resolutions, 1GB and 2GB cards perform identically. In most games at 1920x1080 there's no difference if you're running on high (not ultra) settings.

However, the latest titles like BF3, Metro 2033, Skyrim and Crysis 2 (with the optional texture pack) now actually exceed 1GB of video RAM usage when running on ultra settings at 1920x1080, and of course when running multiple monitors. So if you're planning to play at 1080p I recommend a 2GB card. You'd probably be ok with 1GB since the Radeon HD 6870 isn't quite enough for ultra settings at that resolution. But for future titles I wouldn't get a 1GB card.

Speaking of which, the GTX 560 (non-Ti) is a better choice for BF3 than the 6870.

Note the comments at the bottom in Anandtech's review- they discuss the 1GB vs 2GB issue.

    Here are some 2GB cards:

If you're going to spend over $220 then forget the Radeon HD 6870/GeForce GTX 560 and bypass the HD 6950/GTX 560 Ti as well... upgrade to a Radeon HD 7850 instead for $250. Much better card overall.

  • The extra 1GB of memory does not help much unless you play games on multiple displays. However, an extra 1GB never hurts either. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it between the 1GB and 2GB versions of the Radeon HD 6870.

  • Umm, You suggested you desire a pix card yet your asking approximately RAM. WHAT?!?!?!? Any way, while you're speaking approximately ram, then choose for the 4gb DDR3. it quite is has extra GB than the 1gb DDR5 so your computing gadget will run alot swifter common. maximum programs desire over 2gb of ram to be geared up to run. It additionally relies upon on what typ of ram housing your computing gadget has via actuality that no longer all RAM enjoying cards fit in all laptop's and you may exchange into dropping over 50 money on a ram card which you only cant even use. reliable reliable fortune!

  • neither. in my experience, the 6870 goes well with i3 cpus, but the 2500k really wants the 6890 or one of the 69xx cards.

  • everything costs money.
