1. Finish high school. Develop good study habits. Start working on professional development. Take math, English, biology, chemistry, & physics.
2. Attend an affordable but good four year college. Major in whatever you like, but take the prerequisites required by the medical schools you might like to attend: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, possibly Biochemistry, Calculus, etc. See the book/database Medical School Admission Requirements for details. Earn a very high GPA.
3. Get clinical experience, research experience, teaching experience, leadership experience, etc. Form good relationships with your professors.
4. Prepare for and take the MCAT.
5. Apply to medical school.
6. Assuming you are accepted, go to medical school and study basic medical sciences (biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, neuroscience, histology, etc.) and begin to learn to practice medicine via rotations in surgery, medicine, pediatrics, etc. (four years)
7. Participate in the NRMP and enter a general surgery residency (with pay) (about five years)
8. Do a critical care surgery fellowship (1-2 more years, also with pay)
Biomedical engineering will be a better choice than nursing as an undergraduate course. You might want to look into the armed forces' Health Professional Scholarship Program, which would make you an indentured servant to Uncle Sam but pay your way through medical school. There's a risk that you'd be called away to be a General Medical Officer after your internship, but it's likely they'd let you complete a full general surgery residency and even a trauma fellowship before going on active duty.
1) Get solid grades, score well on the ACT/SAT, and major in something like Biology or Chemistry in college.
2) Get good grades in college and score well on the MCAT.
3) Volunteer at hospitals, doctor's offices, etc. Anything to do with medicinee. You can start doing that right now.
4) Ask a trauma surgeon in your town more about the career. Interview him. Ask him the good and bad about the career. Do it now so you realistically know what to expect from that career.
Get excellent grades in HS.
Do 4 years of college with lots of science.
Do 4 years of med school.
Trauma Surgeon's residency is 7 years in length.
Cost will be around $250,000.
