Do you think I should upgrade to a DSLR camera?

I got into photography as a hobby about a year ago and I'm currently really enjoying it. I use a regular Canon Point Shoot Camera and I love to play around with all of the special effects. I enjoy traveling a lot and so I take pictures of a lot of the places and events I go to. People have told me that I've had pretty good pictures, I play with the black-white, coloring, blur focus, fish-eye, and all those other fun effects when I take pictures. I was looking into upgrading to a DSLR camera, I'm currently looking at either the Canon T3i or the Nikon D3200.

Would you say that purchasing a DSLR would be worth all that extra money? and maybe in a list, what possible things can I do on a DSLR that I cannot do on a regular point shoot? Because of money reasons, I don't plan on getting additionally lens to interchange/swap, but I am willing to work hard and learn the art of photography.
