Is Norfolk, VA a good base?
Would you suggest that its a good base to be on? My cousin who is based there told me that is probably where my first duty station will be
Update:she said it has its pros and cons. She said the same thing about the locals.

Some like it and some avoid it like the plague. (and just how does your Cousin know where you will be stationed? Do you have a Rating yet and is he/she your Detailer?) Also there are SEVERAL Naval Installations in the greater Tide Water Area (AKA Norfolk, VA and the surrounding area) and all are similar yet different in what amenities are available for both On and Off duty.
Different people will have different opinions on it; what did your cousin say? I, personally, hated it. Some of the locals will not like you (as a sailor) that much, but without the Navy or military in that whole area, the local economy would be ruined and Norf*ck would be just a ghost town.
EDIT: Comparing Norfolk to Pascagoula, MS, then Norfolk would be like almost heaven, but comparing it to NS Rota, Spain, then Norfolk would be pure HELL (again, personal opinion).
Depends on what your Rating is, what you can be assigned to and what orders are available at the time you are up for them. Each base is going to have its good qualities as well as its bad ones. What you need to do is take each one with a grain of salt and not sit around moping. You get out and involved with things, see the sites, join organizations, make friends, etc.. then you will have a good time.
My friend is stationed there and he likes it alot, Your 15 mins away from Virginia Beach which is awesome. I heard its a really good base. Good luck with everything
