Do you have to read Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta Series) in order?

I was looking for a new author to read and came upon Patricia Cornwell. I started reading some of her book jackets at Barnes and Noble and I wanted to buy some, but I didn't know which one to start with? Does it matter?

  • I strongly recommend that you read them in order because some important facts from previous books will be mentioned in future books, therefore taking all the excitement out of the book. Whoo! With all that said---

This is the order you SHOULD by them in:

A Time for Remembering (1983; non-fiction; biography of Ruth Bell Graham; later reissued as Ruth: A Portrait)

    Postmortem (1990)

    Body of Evidence (1991)

    All That Remains (1992)

    Cruel and Unusual (1993)

    The Body Farm (1994)

    From Potter's Field (1995)

    Cause of Death (1996)

    Hornet's Nest (1997; Andy Brazil)

    Unnatural Exposure (1997)

    Point of Origin (1998)

    Scarpetta's Winter Table (1998)

    Black Notice (1999)

    Southern Cross (1999; Andy Brazil)

    Life's Little Fable (1999; children's book)

    The Last Precinct (2000)

Isle Of Dogs (novel) (2001; Andy Brazil)

Food to Die For: Secrets from Kay Scarpetta's Kitchen (2002; non-fiction)

Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed (2002; non-fiction)

    Blow Fly (2003)

    Trace (2004)

    Predator (2005)

At Risk (2006) (non-Scarpetta, originally a serialization for The New York Times)

Book of the Dead (2006) (Not yet published!)

  • You don't absolutely have to read them in order, but I still recommend that you do. As with most fictional detectives, you understand the story best if you know all the history and all the things they have done before, and all those things come from reading the books in order. Also, a good, thinking author develops a detective who grows and learns with each new case, and it's more interesting, at least I think it is, if you get to see that growth process. With that said, read "Postmortem" first, as it's the first Scarpetta book.

    Happy reading!

  • Start with "Postmortem" I think you will enjoy them more if you do read them in order. Ms. Cornwell also wrote some books about another female cop in Richmond. They were great. I can't remember the titles-there were 3 or 4, I think.

  • You don't have to read them in order - I didn't, but did find myself flicking back through others to get my time line correct. Once I owned them all I re-read to get it all in order.

  • No, you can read them in any order. Excellent books by the way.
