Developmental Delays?

My son is 5 years old, but he is behind in his development due to be born at only 23 weeks gestation. He has is at a physical level of a 3 year old, intellectual level of a 2.5 year old, and speech level of about a 2 year old.

I was wondering if anyone had or knows a child who was behind developmentally but eventually caught up and how old they were when they caught up.

My son’s pediatrician, his occupational therapist, and his speech therapist all think he will eventually catch up, but obviously they can’t be 100% certain and so I was just curious of others experience with kids who were behind developmentally and eventually caught up.

Thanks!!!

I know I asked this twice yesterday and once today already, but I only got 4 answers between the 3 times and 2 weren't helpful at all.

Oh and this is just because I am curious to hear others experiences, it's not because I am stressing out about it or anything as I believe my son will be fine, I really just like to hear others experiences about stuff my son is going through.

Also I am not asking for a diagnosis for my son as I already know that he is just behind developmentally all I want is some others experiences with kids who were behind developmentally and eventually caught up.

  • I have 3 sons with delays ages 10, 5, and 4. My 5 and 4 yr old are gaining on their peers. My oldest gained until age 7. He is behind now but has other things more than just DD.

In the past 8 yrs. I've seen lots of kids with DD's and most that caught up did so betw 4-7 yrs old.

My 5 and 4 yr old have recently made gains in speech, though still behind, its gaining. PT they caught up @ 2. Cognitive my 5 yr old caught up when he really started speaking, @ 4.

All my boys still show delays with OT and may always will. They have low tech accommodations and my oldest has recently started on a keyboard.
