All you need is your American Passport, or any valid ID such as driver license or another photo ID, if you are a US citizen you can go to Mexico without a passport, the thing is when you want to come back to the US, you must carry your American Passport (if you are american citizen), but according to my experience the border customs can't deny you from enter to your country, you may be send to secondary inspection and be order to answer questions to determine whether you are really you or not, but you also can show a picture ID and your birth certificate as a passport, that will save you time.
