Most modern motherboards have an ethernet port built in.
If yours does not, and you truly need all those cards, you can get a wireless plug for USB, and connect using a wireless router. It's not as fast, not as reliable, and not as secure as a hardwired connection, but it will do.
You should really have both computers connect to that router, and the router connect to the internet. It's not a full firewall, it's more like the half-firewall that comes with XP, but being a *hardware* firewall, it's virtually invulnerable to attacks from the internet. Use it in addition to a full firewall like Zone Alarm. (Yes, I know Zone Alarm isn't necessarily the best, but it always shows up near the top in comparisons.)
If you have two NIC cards, they can be connected to a router via cat5e wires. The router sits connected to the WWW via an ADSL modem or via a Coaxial cable modem. You wouldn't use a USB device unless it's a USB wireless adapter you could plug into the usb port on the pc which is the one that's distanced furthest from your router in another part of the house. Note: if you use a USB wireless adapter you don't need to connect to the ethernet port of the NIC card you purchased, cause that's redundant. Also, you don't need to buy a switch or hub to connect them together to form a network as a router does this better. You should get a Linksys router, WRT54G which is cheap by today's standards or one that supports SRX or extended range of 108 mbps for wireless.
Wireless router and a wireless USB card that will connect the additional computer to the one that has the router connected to it. Good luck.. Most routers come with step by step guides on how to do this..
You could buy a wireless router and 2 USB adapters for Wi-Fi. I think that would be the easiest way for you to have a network set up, especially if they are not close together.
Buy a wireless router, you can connect both through usb port.
Get a router.
