Demo Reel? Seriously?
I was just researching what a demo reel is all about and I find it a bit pathetic seriously. It's just so cheesy to put fragments of yourself and a song in the background..
Another thing I noticed is that only amateur actors with no real career have them. I never saw a successful actor on IMDB with a ,,demo reel''
So what is the point of a demo reel ?

Demo reels do not have songs in the background. If they did, you wouldn't be able to hear the dialogue, so then you would not actually be able to get the full affect of their acting.
A demo reel is usually sent in with an audition that is NOT in person. Most of these are for agents and performing arts schools.
You are right. Most successful actors on IMDb do not have demo reels, but they do usually have a "Video" section that has clips of scenes from some of their movies. That is what a demo reel is. It is basically a bunch of clips grouped together for a certain actor or actress.
Most not-as-well-known actors use them to show casting directors some of their past works. A successful actor, like Ryan Reynolds or George Clooney per say, may not need one because most people, including casting directors, have already seen some of their past films and works.
As for the fact that you are annoyed by it, well, I'm not sure why.
Demo reels with songs in the whole video are really cheesy and not taken professionally. Most casting directors do want demo reels submitted so they can get a since of you acting ability. Also If you are submitting for an agency sometimes if you don't have a demo reel they won't even consider you so they are very important. That's why a lot of actors in the beginning of their careers will do tones of work for feel just to get a copy for there reels. I'm sure you won't find most actors demo reels on IMDB because most of those people are already famous and successful and have no need to have a reel because people are already familiar with their work and also some actors on IMDB have reel but they are private and only sent out to casting directors and are not for the public to see.
Heres a link to a professional acting reel I found online. But I did talk to a casting director once who said they only want 3 scenes in the reel and not more because it takes up there time.
