There are three other serious choices for an OS. Mac OS X, a Linux distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, SuSE, etc.), and a BSD distro (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD).
You have to purchase Macs, but Linux and BSD are free. They come as distributions, so the download site varies depending on the distro. If you go the Linux route, do read about them first, so you know what you are getting into, what distributions exist, and so on.
I suggest you go for Linux, it's much better now than what it used to be two years ago .. for noobs like me that is.
I've been using Linux since september because i was fed up with win xp too.
I tried Vista, it seems nice, but not as i expected after 6 years of development.
One of three linux distros are the best start, i tried them all and right now im playing around with them all. To choose which one i'll stick to.
P.S. All those are free ,, simply google the name and you'll get it.
1- Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft ... amazing , easy , great forum support.
2- Fedora Core 6 ... quite fast and easy to install, comes with GLX installed, which is quite important if you're new.
3- OpenSUSE 10.2 .. the latest of those three and fully equipped, i've read reviews that said it's the best linux distro they've tried so far....
I'm now using openSuse 10.1 and downloading 10.2 to upgrade tomorrow.
When you download any of them, you'll get to keep your windows with no trouble by default.
If you are a computer power user, you'll LOVE linux .. i'm so amazed how something free can be so great ..
Mac's are good for some things, but if you already have PC hardware, check out some of the free linux Graphical OS's.

Try Vista. It's sexy. Supposed to be the most secure Windows yet. It certainly runs much smoother on my PC than XP ever has!
Give Linux RedHat a shot. You can download a 30 day trial version at www.redhat.com.
Good luck.
I enjoy Linux Ubuntu; You can make a "live" disk so that you can boot and run from it and nothing is loaded onto your PC, thus no problem if you don't want it. (You'll need to change your boot priority to seek a CD first, that's all).
Try here: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download?...
U can try linux or McOS....
U'll have to buy McOS and Linux.
U can find it free on linux website... or u can also search Google
Get a Mac !!! I have used both Windows and Mac, and I think Mac's rule !
linux is fun - search 'linux live cd'
