RAM upgrade?
I 'm using Vista and have 512mb Ram.
How much should it cost to upgrade to 1gb Ram?
I could not do this myself so where would be the best place to go?
Update:Marc ...I bought the computer from PC World and yes it's Vista and came with 512mb..says something eh?

Well, I wouldn't buy it from PCWorld. I can't believe they sold you a Vista pc with 512Mb RAM (er, actually, I can believe it of PCWorld).
This is going to seem complicated but it really isn't. If you can put a bank card in an ATM machine you can install a RAM card (just don't expect it to give you any money back).
You should be able to add more RAM but it depends upon whether you have a spare RAM slot. There will probably be three empty slots in your pc. If you have a spare slot you can add more RAM but it *must* be the same type and size as what you already have.
That is, if you currently have DDR2 RAM it must be DDR2 RAM you add. If you currently have 512MB it must be 512MB you add, otherwise it will only read the biggest RAM card. So, if you have 512MB now and add 1GB, it will only read the 1GB card, it won't count as 1.5GB
If you don't have a spare RAM slot you'll need to replace completely.
There will be a maximum amount of RAM your computer can handle, so check that out first or you will be wasting your money, although it should be able to handle at least 1GB or they really have sold you a turkey.
While you're at it, I'd go for 2GB total rather than 1GB.

I'd wear an anti-static wristband and handle it a bit more carefully
If you really don't want to do it yourself I'd get a price from a local pc shop. Installation really shouldn't cost much, it's a five minute job.
You bought a computer in 2007 with Vista on it and only 512mb of RAM? Ouch, I'd stay clear of that shop in future...
I'm guessing you need DDR2, but it could be that they sold you an old system that takes (the older more expensive) DDR. We really need to know what processor/motherboard you've got, but worst case scenario is that you need to buy another 512mb stick of DDR (about £15-£20 ) taking you up to 1gb total. PC World will charge about £35 if I remember correctly, but it literally takes 2 minutes to do and is very simple. It's merely a matter of taking the side off the case, and putting the RAM into the only slot it will fit in. There are videos on youtube showing exactly how to do it (search for "install ram" or similar), and if you're still not confident, just get a friend to do it, they only need a very basic knowledge of computers.
Vista with half a gig of RAM after Christmas... My god that is sad... For Vista: Home Basic, 1GB is fine, not great, but fine (altogether 1.5GB). Any other Vista should have 2-3GB or more. Most computer shops (only PC shops, not supermarket chains) should be able to upgrade your RAM for you. Depending on the kind of RAM you take, and where you are located (Country) it can start around $50 AUD.
RAM comes in lots of different types.
The best advice would be to go to the following web site:
http://www.crucial.com/
or
http://www.crucial.com/uk (if you are in the UK).
Click on the scan my system link and follow the on screen instructions.
The tool will tell you how many memory slots you have free and what type of memory is suitable for your computer.
Once you have this information, you can choose to purchase the memory from Crucial or go elsewhere, but make sure you buy the right type as recommended by Crucial.
Fitting memory is easier than you might think.
Memory comes on chips attached to circuit boards. There are slots inside your computer which you basically slot the circuit boards into.
The memory arrives in a special bag which is designed to protect it from static electricity. Handle the chips carefully and slot them carefully into their slots.
It's always daunting opening your computer for the first time but you have to start somewhere and it will be cheaper to DIY.

If you still don't feel like fitting it yourself, then you could go to a computer store like PC World that has it's own department to fit the RAM, but you will also need to buy the RAM from them and that might cost you a little bit more.
It depends on how old your machine is and what type of memory it uses. The latest memory is so mass produced it's incredibly cheap (less than £20 for 1GB on some websites I know) but as the older stuff is manufactured less, it's becoming more expensive.
This is assuming you have a desktop. If it's a laptop, it's expensive anyway!
As for installation, PC World I think charges a set fee (something like £30) to install memory for you so if you have a friend with computer know how, he'll probably do it for a pint!
definite, improve to a minimum of 2Gb, the recent regularly happening. pass to the dell website and to ascertain what variety you elect. could be everywhere from $20-40. this would heavily improve your desktops overall performance. desktops are growing to be to be greater value-effective, and you gets a respectable twin middle processor for $500 and a minimum of 2Gb's of ram and an somewhat roomy 200Gb annoying stress. in case you elect to make that leap. you in all risk won't have the ability to enhance the photos card in that computing device through fact that PCI convey did no longer relatively come on that many desktops decrease back then, so in case you improve the great computing device and then improve the photos card for a much better computing device than the single you have desirable now.
If you need to get the full features (Like Aero) of Vista you will need atleast 2 GB of RAM . Otherwise your applications will be really slow.
An IGB RAM costs around Indian Rs.1300 ( divide by 45 to get $)
"I could not do it myself" where is your confidence?
I agree with the prices given but on a desktop its easy, I've just done mine.
Unplug computer, undo side of the case, slot in RAM in spare slot next to the other bits that look like what you have just brought or pull one out and replace with yours, close case, plug in and turn on. The PC will do the rest. Good luck.
I'd expect to pay about £15 for the RAM itself, and about £30 for service at a local computer store.
I've just put 1GB of memory in my PC from PC world £39.99. Put it in yourself it easy
