I was wondering if a doctor could tell if a person had a seizure if a patient wasn't under their medical watch or would they just have to go by the symptoms you had during the seizure.
As the nurse said they get most of the information from witnesses that's why it is important that they get clear and accurate information from bystanders. An EEG could possibly show abnormal or seizure activity but seizures can be diagnosed even it is normal.
If a colleague, fellow student or teacher witnessed the seizure they can tell their observations to the ambulance officers who document it. They in turn relay the information to staff at the hospital emergency department.
The sought of information required would be :
* did the victim appear to be conscious during the seizure
* if conscious did they mumble or wander aimlessly
*if the victim fell and became unconscious what position were their arms and legs in
*did the victim froth at the mouth
*how long did the seizure last
*were they incontinent
*once the seizure stopped was the victim aware of their surroundings or were they confused or did they appear to sleep
Of course at the hospital an Electroencephalograph would be performed to further aid diagnosis.
