Do damaged nerves recover from a deep cut?

Four days ago, I cut my hand (between my thumb and index finger). It was bleeding badly, so I went to the E.R.. The doctor who treated me said the cut is 2 inches long and 1inch deep, cutting the fat layer, and possibly some nerves. I got 11 stiches (3 on the fat tissue & 8 on the skin) My index finger is partially numb & when I accidentally stretch, the index finger hurts with a sharp tingling sensation.

The cut is slowly healing, but what I need to know is, will the numbness go away over a period of time? And would it be a good idea for me to go to see a nerve specialist now before times passes by?

Also, the dr. told me not to put ice, but my index finger and the cut area are swollen. Any advice?

Update:

Of course I asked the dr. but she doesn't know for sure. So I'm hoping to get answers from people who had similar situations.

  • The nerves repair very slowly. You will likely experience a lot of tingling and itching in your finger the next few months.

No ice now. That window has passed. You can let cool water run over it, but ice is bad if you have nerve damage.

The tingling sensation is from the nerves creating new paths to reconnect.
