They're both great teams in their own respect, you can't pick one and say the other is bad, its almost impossible to do that. Historically Real Madrid is more successful and more respected. On the other hand, barcalona in the past few years have created magical moments and history. They've won incredibile amounts of trophies and awards, with this wonderful generation of players that they've produced.
Currently i still think Barca is a better team, you look at this season that just went by, they won more then Madrid. Barca won the uefa super cup, they won the super spanish cup, they won the copa del rey, they won the club world cup, while Madrid only took la liga, which i will give them and Cristiano Ronaldo full respect for.
Fans, both teams have alota fans, Madrid has had loads of fans for many years, we obviously know the reason for that, since a numerous legends played there, while barca's fan base has been strong, but like in the past few years its obviously grown immensely due players like xavi, iniesta, messi etc.
Both teams have world class players, you have ronaldo, messi, ozil, benzeema, xabi alsonso, Ramos, Casilias, for madrid, while at Barca you have Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Alves, Puyol, Pique. On paper madrid looks like a stonger side i don't know why i get that feeling, but when they play Barca has been dominant for years now, until Last May or April when Madrid finally beat them after losing many times.
Madrid has been the better team this year but Barcelona has a lot more depth in talent. The bad part about watching Barcelona is the possess 60% of the time and up from just passing around. Madrid doesn't have a great midfield. Both teams fans are great though but I prefer watching Ronaldo.
