How does dentist remove tartar?

I'm curious how it's done.

Also, can a really good electric toothbrush also do that job?

  • As stated, tartar (also known as calculus or calcified plaque) is removed with stainless steel instruments or an ultrasonic device. Oftentimes, dentists employ dental hygienists to do the cleanings. Dental hygienists are specially trained to clean teeth.

A really good electric toothbrush doesn't remove tartar but it can be a great tool to prevent tartar from forming. Plaque is a living bacteria that forms in your mouth every 12-24 hours and daily flossing and brushing removes it from the tooth surface. If plaque is allowed to accumulate, untouched, for as little as 48 hours, it will harden and become tartar. Once it gets to that point, it becomes more difficult to remove with flossing and brushing and may need to be removed by a dental hygienist.

  • A dental hygienist is usually the person who performs the actual cleaning of the teeth. Plaque and built up tartar is scraped off the teeth using dental tools made specifically for this job. Yes, a good electric toothbrush, if used correctly, will help in preventing build-up.

  • he scratches it off. and i have no idea about the toothbrush
