texas hold em dealer?
im looking at starting to deal games of texas hold em for a friend...but i am nervous because i dont know all the ins and outs...i know the basic rules and how to play the game...i understand the general deal (flop, turn, river etc.) and the hand rankings...im most nervous about the pot and how it works and so on...what all does being a dealer entail?

Being the dealer means you need to know enough about poker that you can tell others whats what....
So being the dealer you are required to shuffle, make sure the bets people are making are right or match when they call... count people chips if they go all in, and know what hand beats what...
Everyone gets dealt 2 cards you start dealing from the left of the dealer button one card to each player after one full circle you deal one more time so everyone has 2 cards
Goal to make the best possible five card hand using your cards or board cards... you can choose to use both of your 2 cards or none at all to use your best possible hand....
Next how to deal and play
You need a dealer disc or puck that moves around after each hand to indicate where to start dealing... you start dealing from the left of the puck or disc one card to each player around the table then another one... after everone gets two
The two players who are left to the dealer have to post the small blind then the guy next to him to the left posts the big blind, the action start to the player left of the big blind (he has no money in yet) he chooses to call fold or raise, after everyone has agreed upson a bet (considering nobody folded)
You start to deal the flop... you first burn one card (put one card away face down) then put out the next 3 cards out face up... then a round of betting begins again... the action starts to the person to the immediate left of the button (still with a hand) (this is different from preflop action) for example say the Small blind called the raise of the under the gun (guy immediate left of the big blind) he starts the action on the flop... after everyone has betted and called...
You deal a turn... you burn one card... then put one card face up making a total of 4 cards out so far
person to immediate left of dealer button (still with a hand) starts the action after the action is complete
You deal the final card... the river... you burn one card (put it in a pile with all the folded hands) then deal one card face up... (no more dealing no more cards come out now...) now you wait till the action is complete and see who the winner is and who gets the money...
That was how to deal if there were 4 or more players....
Its a little different when there are 3 players... one player has the button... the people to the left of him has the Small blind and the Big blind... you still deal to the Small blind first because hes immediate left of the button... but the difference is who starts the action... ususally the button acts last... but 3 handed he (acts first PREFLOP)... after betting its normal... the guy to the left of the button still with a hand starts the action eg on the flop... small blind acts first
Last thing i want to mention difference is heads up play (only two people playing or left)
You deal the same way always to the left of the button...
but the action starts with the person with the Button... also the Button posts the Small Blind and acts first (this is different to 3 handed and 4handed plus notice that) (Preflop)

(Post flop = after betting preflop) However after the flop its normal (guy who acts first is the guy left of the button)

If the other player won the pot and you are not sure why, he may have completed a hand that you did not see. For instance, on a paired board there could still be three of a suit (three hearts, etc.) and he could have made a flush, which would win. Also, if the pairs were something like 88 and 55 with the fifth card being a 4, he would have a straight. Something like that may be hard to see, especially if the board cards were picked up right away. The last possibility would be a full house. If one of the pairs on the board was 66 he would have made a full house with his 6. However, if he did not make a straight, flush, or full house, the pot should have gone to you or the pot should have been split. That would depend on what the fifth card was. If the fifth card (non-paired card) on the board was a 2, 3, 4, 5, or 8 you should have won the pot. If the fifth card on the board was a 10, J, Q, K, A the pot should have been split between you and the other player. Also, there is no awarding a pot to a player in poker because of any "act last" rule. If the board is the best hand so that each player is playing the same five card hand, the pot is split in half and each player gets half.
Most Texas Hold 'Em Poker games start with the two players to the left of the dealer (the button) putting a predetermined amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt, ensuring that there's something to play for on every hand. This is called "posting the blinds." Most often, the "first blind" -- the player to the left of the dealer -- puts up half the minimum bet, and the "second blind" puts up the full minimum bet.

If you don't know how to deal Texas Hold 'em, and you don't know how to manipulate pots, (which is sometimes very complicated), then perhaps you should offer to make baked goods for your friend's poker games instead.
