Torque Converter problem?

Yesterday when I was driving my 2002 Ford Focus, it would get to 25mph then the engine would rev up really loud and the car wouldn't go any faster. It sounded like if you put your car in park and then hit the gas. I was at school and I figured out how to maneuver it to get past 25mph, and after that it drives pretty normally. But if I reach a stop sign and have to go below 25, it doesn't want to speed up past 25 again and I have to do the maneuvering to get it up past it so it will drive normally again.

I asked my friend whos a mechanic and he said it was a problem with the torque converter, and that I should put ATF transmission fluid into it, and if it's not the fluid then I have bigger problems on my hand.

So I'm just asking you guys for your opinions on what it might be, and how I can fix it, and if I need to take it to a garage to get fixed, how much would it be? Any help is appreciated.

  • The TCC(torque converter clutch)solenoid can sometimes cause a similar problem. When its faulty, the engine will stall when coming to a stop but not all the time.It also causes the engine rpm,s to be higher than normal for the same speed. So lets say you're doing 50mph and the rpm gauge is at 1500rpm,then minutes later the rpm gauge is at 2000 rpm but you're still going 50mph.Those are the two typical symptoms for a faulty tcc solenoid. If you have a multimeter, you should also inspect the throttle position sensor.Connect the positive lead to the signal wire, the negative lead to the ground wire, turn the key on/engine off.Measure voltage signal. It should be at 0.45-1.0 volts at idle. Now open the throttle blade up slowly and see if voltage moves upwards gradually with no erratic readings.Voltage should max out at 5 volts. If voltage doesn't increase gradually, has erratic readings, max voltage exceeds 5 volts,or you have no voltage reading at all-the TPS(throttle position sensor)is faulty

  • sounds more like the transmission if it was the torque converter your car would make a whislling sound or more likely keep dying out

  • Check transmission fluid level before you burn the T.C out.
