Charcoal grill turn into a smoke grill?

Can you smoke with a portable or a regular charcoal grill?

Can I use wood from a tree to smoke with that i have recently cut down? If so how would I prepare it to be used? Can I use a cut up plantain tree to smoke with also?

    A grill that small won't work as it needs height away from heat
