How do you increase video RAM?

PC is SONY VAIO PCV-RS400. It has motherboard integrated Intel Extreme Graphic video card. Is there a way to increase Video RAM? (I looked in BIOS set up, but there isn't an option for that.)

Update:

It is a desktop PC.

  • The only way to increase the RAM is to buy a new card with more RAM.

  • If you have an integrated card you are sharing memory with the system, the new card is a way of putting more memory in but if you just wanted to increase the memory, add more system memory.

By adding a card you do make it easier to run, but then you add a power drain to your system, make it run more off the CPU and it can be a problem if it fails, you just disable the on-board card when you set up the new one, it is likely a AGP outlet, if not the are some 64 & 128 PCI cards hanging around for around $60-80, a discount or reseller could get you one for under $50.

  • MOST laptops with shared memory have an option in the bios to change memory allocated to card, some MAY have it under display properties in Windows, but unlikely.

Best bet is to READ the operator manual for the laptop (By the way, well done to all the numpties suggesting a new video card for a laptop, neat trick) or contact Sony's support service for spefic info.

  • Intel Extreme Graphics (including version 2 or above) are onboard cards with limited power and little compliance versus DirectX (no hardware T&L support -most newer games will not work at all)

I strongly recommend a card manufactured by LEADTEK,based on 7600GT Extreme with 256MB DDR3 would provide 30-400% performance increase.

Top of the line is anything based on Nvidia 8800GTS,however this 4x-5x more expensive than a 7600GT

  • you can increase you video memory from BIOS. but the problem is that, when u increase video memory in an integrated memory card, you are going to use system memory, it won't help at all. becase it's shared memory. it'll be better if you get a new video card. you can choose how much memory you want. if your computer can handle PCI EXPRESS, go for it

  • Probably not a way if it is a notebook. If it is a desktop/tower then you may add a separate video card in a PCI slot or a AGP slot.

  • There is one in the BIOS somewhere. It is under Intergrated Devices or something like that. Usually you can only go up to 64mb and it takes away from your system memory.

  • Unfortuneately the only way is to install video card with more ram. Video Ram is factory installed.

  • Use secondary graphics card, built-in graphics uses system memory, for all functions. You need to put a new graphics card in your machine.

  • You will need to purchase a separate video card if you want more video memory.
