Why do concepts artists use blue pencils to draw?

The type of drawing medium I'm talking about can often be seen in storyboards, character designs, disney stuff, set designs. I've gotten used to drawing in the blue pencil (lead), but can't quite put my finger on why the pros use it.

Update:

I know that it is not photo-copyable, but that's not really what I'm asking. I find it is not erasable by the way. I was thinking maybe because it is permanent, doesn't smear, and is easy to blend or something... I dunno

  • There was a time when you used blue pencils because they wouldn't show up when scanned or photographed for reproduction, and, you can ink on top of the blue line. But, part of the problem with using a blue pencil is that if you bear down too hard, the blue line WILL show up in the repro process. You can also use a light pencil line (2H) and erase it fairly easily. It's very difficult to erase the heavy blue line though.

  • I am not positive on this, nor do I have a source to verify, but I do recall hearing and possibly from speaking to comic book artists, that blue pencil won't show when photocopied or otherwise reproduced. Maybe someone else out there has the reason or proof behind it, but that's what my understanding is/was. Hope it helps.

  • The blue pencils are called "non-repro" pencils.

"I have special paper that already has the borders printed on it. It also has lines for lettering printed on it. Both sets of guides are in light blue. I also do my sketches in light blue which is called "non-repro blue." This is short for "non-reproduction," meaning when I make a photocopy of it, the lines would not show up.This is good because it means that I won't have to erase any pencil lines later like I would have to do if I drew it with a regular pencil. • So..

A very good site that teaches how to draw realistic pencil portraits is http://pencilportraits.toptips.org/

I have searched so many sites on the internet for so many years (wasting my time really) to try and better my drawing/sketching style but have never succeeded getting pasted the flat 2D outcome; that is until I tried using some special methods I found on http://pencilportraits.toptips.org./ This is exactly what I have been searching for and with time on my hands I have the outcome I have always wanted. I bought this online course. I strongly recommend it.

    Hope it helps.

Very good work, this poem is full.I like the 8/6 scheme it suits the sentiments of your poem quite nicely.you have generated some real music within this piece and the symbology you have chosen to employ is very strong.I love the psychological implications of the drawing concept it brings to the poem another level. A poem of allegorical proportions.
