Do epidurals really help?

When you are in labor and finally get your epidural does it help allot and what does it feel like. Does it make you numb or drugged feeling?

  • they tend to numb you which make it a lil' hader to push. That is why docs. prefer to give them a lil' early. If you want to have your baby naturally i would make sure that its sumthing you really have your mind set on. It is thee most painful and beautiful thing you will ever experience. find out the baby's size and disscus this with your doc. To each there own and you know what your capable of.

  • I had a epidural at about hr 36 of my 48 hr labor. It worked very well for me, because it was the difference of having a natural birth or not. I had been in very intense labor for so long that my midwife was concerned that I would not be able to push if I did not get some sleep. Once I had the epidural, the pain was gone, I could still feel the contractions, but they were more like a braxton hicks...just the tightening feeling. I was then able to sleep and woke up at 10cm ready to push, so for me it was a great thing. I didn't feel drugged at all. I was numb from the waist down, but did not really notice it. There was a point when I could feel the hip pain again, but then they shifted me to that side and it helped a little.

Do not worry about the size of your baby. Doc's are not able to accurately tell you the size by palpation and even ultrasound is not accurate. The size is not necessarily the issue, it is the size of the babies head. You could have a big baby with a small head, or a small baby with a big head. So don't worry about that. My son was 2 weeks late and was 8lbs 4oz...I really was not concerned about his size when I was birthing him. Plus, the pain...I don't even remember it now. I would do it all again in a heartbeat! It was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced.

The epidural helped me! If you feel you need it, then take it! Best of luck to you.

  • Yes. I didn't feel contractions in my lower back anymore. But I still could feel the pressure in my pelvic area during active labor and pushing. But that turned out to be helpful. Since I was worried it would slow labor from not knowing when to push, but it ended up not being that way at all for me. And no it didn't make me feel drugged at all. Your legs will feel tingly at first and heavy, but that's not a big deal.

  • It doesn't make you feel drugged because the medication isn't injected into your blood stream, it goes into the spinal space in your back. For most women it works very very well, for other women it doesn't work as well, and for some women it does not work at all for a variety of factors. It isn't the doctor's incompetence at placing it, either, a woman's anatomy can affect how the medication goes in and where it distributes, if you have a fast labor it won't work, etc.

  • It makes you tingly feeling from the waist down, so you don't feel the intense pain of child birth. I didn't feel drugged at all with mine, I felt great & was able to enjoy my labor. I wouldn't change a thing!

  • Wow! Yea. It does help. Numbs you from the waist down. What a life saver!!! And since it is put in your spine, you are not dopey feeling.

  • Mine really didn't work, but most women say they help amazingly.
