Carburetor problem Yamaha Virago 535 1998.?

Start up from cold engine and winter months no problem but during the summer the engine tick over is fast especially when hot. Do I need to adjust carb's.

  • This is a common issue that comes up with bikes that run CV [constant Velocity] carbs like yours. High idle when warm is often caused by improper adjustment of the mixture, idle and balance. It is absolutely necessary to make these adjustments with the engine at full operating temperature. Letting it idle for a few minuets just wont cut it. Take a nice 10 mile ride before you begin. Adjust for even slack in the cables, adjust mixture for highest idle, adjust idle for proper tickover and repeat with some sort of differential manometer for balance at idle. Run up to 3k and re balance using the cable adjustment. There are several tutorials on the net for building a manometer for this purpose for about $5 and also procedures for adjusting mixture and balance. good luck

  • Well yeah the fast tick over is a sign of the engine being hot, but is it such a big problem??

You could lover the idle by twisting the idle pin anti-clockwise but if its not causing a big problem at the moment then their is no point messing around with the carbs it may just cause you more problems

  • What id do is take to dealer have full tune up valve adjustment and carb sync . That way nothing is forgotton

  • it sounds like you bike is suffering from engine starvation (too much air and not enough fuel) this will cause it run hot,and idle fast as you described.a quick adjustment air/fuel screw should cure the problem (of course this me assuming that your bike has a carburetor rather then EFI).

    good luck
