As a type 1 teen, I eat whatever I want, within reason. I don't pay attention to calories, but rather count my carbohydrate intake religiously in order to take the proper amount of insulin. Before I was diagnosed I was eating relatively healthy, but I eat even more vegetables since they are very low in carbohydrates and I can treat them as virtually free.
I also try to get more fat in with my meals in order to slow down the absorption of sugar into the blood.
With a type 2 teen that attempts to control their diabetes, they would limit their carb intake to a much greater extent than me in order to not require insulin injections.
diabetics whether teens, small children or adults, whether type 1 or type 2 can eat any thing they want as long as they take their meds on schedule, exercise on schedule, etc. There is no banning any foods any more. The smarter ones do limit sugary and starchy foods, but nothing is banned.
Calorie counts would be like any other teenager! But Diabetics in general do not worry too much about the calories in foods. They are more concerned with grams of carbohydrate as this is what will give them a few problems.
For more information about Diabetes http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes this site is excellent in that it is up to date, complete, easy to read and navigate.
Diabetic teens are just like other teens, They should balance as much as possible. It also depends on
the type of diabetes one or two. Type one covers their carbs with insulin and they work more extensively with their doctors and diet team, type two is more restricted in their diet because they dont use insulin.
